Biographical Data

paulo da costa was born in Angola and raised in Portugal. His first book of fiction, The Scent of a Lie, received the 2003 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book in the Caribbean & Canada region and the W.O. Mitchell (City of Calgary) Book Prize. His poetry and fiction have been published in literary magazines around the world and have been translated to Italian, Spanish, Slovenian, Serbian and Portuguese. In Portuguese the forthcoming book of poems eco(lógico) - Livros Pé d'Orelha, 2007 follows his inaugural notas de rodapé. paulo is also the recipient of the 2003 ProVerbo Portuguese language prize in poetry as well as in fiction. A writer, editor and translator, paulo lives on Vancouver Island and at www.paulodacosta.com.

As a translator paulo da costa has translated to the Portuguese poets as diverse as Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, Patrick Lane, Richard Harrison, Weyman Chan, rajinderpal s. pal, Joelene Heathcote and Shane Rhodes. To the English he has translated the Portuguese poets: Al Berto, Nuno Júdice, José Tolentino Mendonça, Rita Taborda Duarte and Daniel Faria. Brazilian poets: Mauro Faccioni Filho and Ricardo Corona. Angolan poet Paula Tavares. From the Spanish he has translated the Mexican poets: Coral Bracho and Verónica Volkow and the Peruvian fiction writer Eduardo González-Viaña. And Serb writer David Albahari.
