Biographical Data

Born 1939 in Edmonton; studied English literature at the University of Alberta, comparative literature at Rutgers (New Jersey); now teaches at York University in Toronto. Translates mostly Quebec literature into English. Authors include Marie-Claire Blais, Jacques Ferron, Claude Gauvreau. Sees translation as part of his academic work. Thus, the English renderings of Gauvreau's Entrailles and of the manifesto Refus global are pre-published appendages to a book on the Automatist movement of Montreal. Winner of the Canada Council Prize for Entrails in 1981. Past president of the LTAC. Associated with Exile magazine and Exile Editions since 1973.
