Biographical Data A native of Saskatchewan, Sheila Fischman was educated in Toronto, where she worked in publishing before moving to Quebec. A co-founder of the periodical Ellipse: uvres en traduction/Writers in Translation and a founding member of the LTAC, she has also been a columnist for the Toronto Globe and Mail and the Montreal Gazette, a broadcaster with CBC Radio, and was literary editor of the Montreal Star. She now devotes herself full time to literary translation, specializing in novels and short stories. Her list of translations from the French includes some 35 books, as well as Roland Lepage's classic play Le Temps d'une vie (commissioned by the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto) and a number of works for film and television. She has completed Juliette Pomerleau, by Yves Beauchemin, to be published by McClelland & Stewart; and Prayers of Wise Child by Roch Carrier (Prières d'un enfant très très sage, Stanké, 1988), to be published by Penguin. Currently, she is translating Bonheur fou by François Gravel (Boréal, 1990) for Cormorant, and her next project will be Le Vieux Chagrin by Jacques Poulin (Leméac, 1989), to be published by Véhicule. She has twice been awarded the Canada Council Prize for Translation, and in 1988 and 1990 was among the finalists for the Governor General's Translation Prize. Her translations Heartbreaks Along the Road (Roch Carrier) and The First Garden (Anne Hébert) were awarded the Félix-Antoine Savard Prize by the Translation Center, Columbia University, in 1989 and 1990, respectively.
