Biographical Data

Born in Toronto, Barbara Godard studied English, Canadian and Quebec literature and comparative literature at the universities of Toronto, Montréal, and Bordeaux. She began translating articles in the social and physical sciences at this time. Recently she has translated essays and catalogues in the visual arts. Since 1971, she has taught in the English department at York University, where she is also in the Women's Studies program and the graduate programs in Social and Political Thought and French. She has published widely on Canadian and Quebec literature, literary, feminist and translation theory, as well as translations in magazines and anthologies in Canada, the United States, England, and France. For several years she wrote an annual review article on literary translation for the University of Toronto Quarterly. Barbara Godard is the author of Talking About Ourselves: The Cultural Productions of Native Women (1985) and Audrey Thomas: Her Life and Work (1989) and editor of Gynocritics/Gynocritiques: Feminist Approaches to the Writing of Canadian And Quebec Women (1987) and Collaboration in the Feminine: Writings on Women and Culture from Tessera (1994). She is a founding co-editor of the bilingual feminist journal Tessera with Agnes Whitfield. She is currently editing: Translation Studies in Canada: Institutions, Discourses, Texts.
