Biographical Data

Born in 1949 in Moscow, Michael Gourvits graduated from Moscow State University, and later completed a Ph.D. degree in Modern History. Starting in early seventies, he did translations, reviews and surveys of contemporary Western books in social sciences for the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, as well he worked as a professor of Russian History. Since 1978 worked as a journalist, reviser and editor. In the late seventies and eighties, published many translations, articles, interviews, surveys of his own. In 1986 began his career as a professional literary translator, beginning with some works by Ernest Hemingway. By the mid-nineties he translated from English and Spanish about 20 books. Since 1997 he lives in Montreal. Working as a translator and Russian History teacher, he plans to translate the works of Canadian authors into Russian.
