Biographical Data Born near Utrecht, Holland, Liedewij Hawke moved to Canada in 1963. She holds degrees in French language and literature from the University of Utrecht (B.A. Hon.) and the University of Toronto (M.A.). She also studied at Le Manoir in La Neuveville, Switzerland and, briefly, in Paris at the Sorbonne. For several years Liedewij Hawke worked for CJBC, CBC's French-language radio station in Toronto. Her working languages are Dutch, French, and English. Although she has done some translating from English into French (captions and introductory texts for the bilingual photobooks Quebec, 1973, and Montreal, 1974), she specializes in translation from French to English. Before undertaking her first literary translation she studied translation at the University of Toronto, working toward a diploma in translation. In 1986 she won the Governor General's Award for Translation (then called the Canada Council Translation Prize), as well as the John Glassco Translation Prize, for Hopes and Dreams, The Diary of Henriette Dessaules 1874-1881.
