Chava Rosenfarb Wins the John Glassco Prize

        This year’s John Glassco Prize, awarded by the LTAC, went to Mrs. Chava Rosenfarb for the translation from Yiddish to English that she did of her own novels, Bociany and Of Lodz and Love (Syracuse University Press, 2000). The original works had been published in Tel Aviv in 1983 by Peretz Farlag.
        In her translation, Chava Rosenfarb, who now lives in Toronto, brilliantly recast her work in English while conveying the rhythms and idioms of the original. The Prize was officially awarded on September 29, during a literary evening held at the National Library of Canada, in Ottawa, to mark the opening of an exhibition on the LTAC’s twenty-five years of activity.
        The members of the jury were Hugh Hazelton, Charlotte Melançon and Daniel Sloate. The jury also awarded an honourable mention to Rachelle Renaud for her translation of Any Mail? and other stories by Gérald Tougas (Nuage Editions).
        The John Glassco Prize is awarded annually, since 1982, to a first published book-length literary translation. The target language must be either English or French but source languages other than English or French are accepted. John Glassco, who gave his name to the Prize, was a well-known writer and translator who died in 1981. Among others, he translated Saint-Denys Garneau’s poetry and journal into English.
