Notice biographique
Élizabeth Robert, founder of Montréal's multilingual public reading series Noches de poesía and literary translator, was born in Beloeil, Québec. Élizabeth holds a BA in Spécialisation de traduction (English into French) from Concordia University and fluently speaks many languages.
Élizabeth published her first translation at Triptyque in 2004, La bête mystique (her French version of Stephen Morrissey's The Mystic Beast); then, in 2005, a short bilingual presentation of four English speaking female poets living in Montréal (Un quatuor de femmes poètes anglophones) in Arcade volume 63; her French translation of one of Stephanie Bolster's poem was featured on the docks of Montréal's metro stations as part of La poésie prend le métro, 2005 edition. In 2006, some of her translations were published in a Canadian Anthology of literary translations TransLit, vol. 7. In 2007, her French adaptation of Lance Blomgren's Walkups was published at Adage edition, under the title Walkups: scènes de la vie montréalaise. In February of the same year, Élizabeth published some of her own poems in the collective chapbook thelawnchairsoiree, at Sitting Duck Press and in Helios. In 2008, she produced and directed the multilingual collective Troc-paroles/Troc de paraules (Adage/Pagès) which featured Québec poets and Catalan's Josep Maria Sala-Valldaura. The book was launched in Barcelona, Lleida and Tàrrega during the authors' and translators' tour of Catalunya, when the first international delegation Noches de poesia represented Quebec's multilingual litterature at LIBER08. The events were included in IMAGINA QUEBEC and supported by the Quebec government. Short films (videopoems) inspired by the texts were also produced for each of the poets featured and presented in both Catalunya and Canada. One of the film, Habra sido tu cuerpo, inspired by Angel Mota's text and produced by Raimundo Morte went on to win Barcelona's Video Award, and was then presented in Sevilla and Macedonia.
In 2009, Élizabeth translated and copublished the very first publication in French of Dwayne Morgan's Spoken Words. Both the author and translator were present at the FiEstival 3 in Brussels for the European launch of Le Making Of d'un Homme (Adage/Maelström, 2009). The bilingual anthology was then launched in Montréal as part of the 30th Festival international de jazz de Montréal with live performances by the author and his musicians.
Élizabeth works closely with Diffusion Adage, promoting migrant literature in Montréal, Québec, Canada and abroad. She created in 2006 the multilingual public reading series Noches de poesía that she hosts every first Wednesday of the month in a Montréal restaurant. Since 2007, Élizabeth is the national editor of Young Poets.ca, the youth section of the League of Canadian Poets. She participated in the 4th & 5th editions of Random Acts of Poetry and has been reading her own work in French, English and Spanish at various venues (Festival Voix d'Amérique, Yellow Door Poetry & Prose, Visual Arts Poetry Reading, Lovers & Others). Élizabeth also produces and hosts POESIA LIBRE, a Spanish radioshow dedicated to poetry, literary translation and aficionados, which is broadcasted live on 102,3 FM and available in podcast on www.nochesdepoesia.com/audio. Since January 2009, she also cohosts Les contes à rendre on www.choq.fm every Thursday. She speaks about literary news and events while interviewing local poets, authors, translators and performers in French and in English.
