Translating Chagall’s first autobiography from Yiddish to French

The autobiography of Marc (Moshe) Chagall was first published in New York in 1925 in Yiddish. In 1931, another version of the same text appeared in Paris, in French. The two versions contain considerable differences. Determined to restore the original text, Chantal Ringuet and Pierre Anctil decided to translate the 1925 Yiddish version into French for the first time. This translation was published under the title Mon univers; autobiographie. This version is more closely situated in Chagall’s Jewish cultural roots, and reveals the origins of Chagall’s artistic impulse.
