Notes Biographiques

Born in Boston, Linda Gaboriau moved to Montreal in 1963. After completing B.A. and M.A. degrees in French Language and Literature at McGill University, she decided to make Montreal her home. As a freelance broadcaster and journalist, she has hosted and produced radio shows for the CBC and Radio-Canada networks and was theatre critic for the Montreal Gazette. She has been particularly active in Canadian and Quebec theatre. For several years she was in charge of the dramaturgical workshops as well as the translation and exchange projects at Montreal's Centre des auteurs dramatiques. She now devotes most of her time to literary translation. She has translated more than 60 plays, including the works of some of Quebec's most prominent playwrights. Her translations have been published and widely produced across Canada and abroad. Her translation of René-Daniel Dubois's play, Being at Home with Claude, received numerous productions across Canada and was subsequently produced in New York and in London's West End. Her translation of Michel Marc Bouchard's Les Feluettes (Lilies) was nominated for the 1991 Governor General's Award for literary translation and won both the 1990-91 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play and a 1992 Chalmers Award for an outstanding Canadian Play. Adapted as a feature film, directed by John Greyson, Lilies won the 1996 Genie Award for Best Film. The Eye is an Eagle, her translation of L'Œil américain, the award-winning book of essays by poet-naturalist Pierre Morency was nominated for the 1993 Governor General's Award. Stone and Ashes, her translation of Daniel Danis's play, Cendres de cailloux, first produced by Factory Theatre and published by Coach House Press, won the 1996 Governor General's Award for literary translation.
