Hugh Hazelton
Fish to Fish
Once again
I'm walking on water
even if it's all happening on a train
where it's hot
I know that when I step down
the river will open
everything will fly off
your fingers on my neck will end up strangling me
your eyes won't see me any longer
Despite these prophecies
we stay on the train
because there's nothing else to do
except imagine we're captives
forever
Take me to make believe
that our feet no longer touch the ground
take me on the ground
take me on the bridge
adrift
You have no idea how strong the current is
you don't know a thing about my cry
my breathing
every time you've got to
stick your head above water
to come to me
imagine for an instant
what we would have become
if you had agreed
to hold your breath
you would have been drunk with depths and tides
tiny scales would have appeared
around your mouth and seaweed
along your veins
But you had to open the doors of the train
as hard as you could
after that we left reality
do I have to remind you of it now
