Jonathan Kaplansky
Mouth to Mouth
One more time
I walk on water
even if everything is happening on a train
where it's hot
I know that by setting foot on the ground
the river will open
everything will fly away
your fingers on my neck will end up strangling me
your eyes no longer seeing me
Despite these prophecies
we linger on the train
there's nothing else to do
than picture ourselves prisoners
forever
Take me so we can pretend
that our feet no longer touch the ground
take me on the ground
on the bridge
drifting off
You don't know the force of the current
know nothing of my cry
my breathing
each and every time
to lift your head out of the water
to come over to me
Imagine for an instant
what we'd have become
if you'd agreed
to hold your breath
you'd have felt the thrill of the deep, of the tides
small scales appearing
around your mouth and algae
sprawling along your veins
But you had to open the doors of the train
with all your might
since then we've left reality behind
need I remind you of that today
