Michèle Sykes
Mouth to Mouth
Once again
I walk on the water
Even if it all happens on a train
Where it is warm
I know that in touching my foot to the ground
The river will part
Everything will vanish
Your fingers on my neck will end up strangling me
Your eyes will no longer see me
Despite these prophecies
We stay on the train
Because there is nothing else to do
Than to imagine ourselves as captives
Forever
Take me to pretend
That our feet will no longer touch the ground
Take me on the ground
Take me on the bridge
Adrift
You don't know the current's strength
You don't understand anything of my cry
My breath
Each time you must
Bring your head above water
To come to me
Let's imagine an instant
What we could have become
If you had agreed
To hold your breath
You would have understood the ecstasy of the depths and the tides
Small scales would have appeared
Around your mouth and seaweed
The length of your veins
But you had to open the train doors
With all your strength
We have since left reality
I need to remind you of that today.
