Diane Vallières
The kiss of life
Once again
I am walking on water
although this takes place in a train
a sweltering train
If my foot ever touches down
the river shall open up
and swallow the whole world up
your fingers on my neck will finally strangle me
your eyes will stop seeing me
Despite this grim prospect
we are staying in the train
for there is nothing to do
but believe we are forever
prisoners
Take me so I feel that
our feet do not touch down anymore
take me on the floor
take me on the bridge
adrift
You do not know how strong is the current
you know nothing of my cry
or my breath
each time
you have to reach out for air
to come to me
For one moment let us imagine
what we would have become
if you had agreed
to hold on your breath
you would have experienced the rapture of the deep and the tides
small scales would have formed
around your mouth and algae
would have grown along your veins
But you had to open the doors of the train
as hard as you could
reality has been evading us ever since
don't you see
