Translation of Annie Molin Vasseur's poem "Mémoires océanes"
Ocean Memories
(Excerpts)
I am conch or skiff
oyster embryonic
adrift
I wash up against the rock
my ivory lining congealed
mother-of-pearl of all Japans.
I
infinite oceanic
of universal memory
am the humble pearl
the iridescent womb
cradle of all humanity.
Like a boat
listing, leaking
through a wound
I lie, breached
winkles and parasites
invade my sea-going shell
marooned for eternity
a hull abandoned
its oars stashed.
Sculpture
from the deep
I distill calcified tears
and pray memory to move on.
