Translation of Annie Molin Vasseur's poem "Mémoires océanes"
Ocean Memories
(Excerpts)
Me conch or dinghy
oyster adrift as seed
far from where I was spawned
I founder on rock
setting inner ivory
nacre of all the Japans.
I
ocean's infinity
universal memory
am the little pearl whose
iridescent belly
cradles humankind
...
Like a capsized boat
drafting water through some open wound
I lie exposed
winkle and a raft of parasites
forever set
in my skipper shell
oars stowed
inside abandoned belly.
Sculpture of the sea's floors
I secrete calcareous tears
and beg memory move ahead.
