Translation of Annie Molin Vasseur's poem "Mémoires océanes"

Oceanic Memory

(Excerpts)

Myself a conch or boat
like oyster spat, adrift
far from home
I strike a reef
paralyzing the ivory
mother-of-pearl within.

I
infinite ocean
universal memory
am a tiny pearl
in a multi-hued belly
cradle of humanity.

Like a vessel with a pierced hull
taking on water through a gaping
wound I lie
winkles and multiple parasites
frozen for eternity
in my sailor's shell
with oars safely stowed
and a deserted belly.

Sculpture on the ocean floor
I weep calcium tears
and pray memory keeps drifting along.
