Translation of Annie Molin Vasseur's poem "Mémoires océanes"
Ocean Memories
(Extracts)
A hollow shell, a floating craft
An oyster adrift
A tiny spat in waterspace
My home is beckoning, I run aground
As ivory takes hold
My mother-of-pearl, this Japan everlasting
Now I am one with the infinite ocean
A universal memory
Tracking the tiny pearl
Set in the shimmering wellspring
The cradle of humankind
Like a listing ship
Water courses through gaping wounds
And with winkles I lie
A harbour for hangers-on
Everlasting parasites
In my sailor's shell
My oars stowed
In my empty womb
Carved from the depths of the sea
I conjure tears of milk and chalk
And beseech my memory: arise, and walk!
