Translation of Annie Molin Vasseur's poem "Mémoires océanes"

Ocean Memories

(Excerpts)

Am conch or craft
oyster twining from spat
in open sea, beginning,
breaking from rock

fusing ivory lining
lacteal pearl of all the Japans.

I
endless ocean
one memory
am a diminutive pearl
in the shimmering womb,
our cradle.

...

A prostrate boat
seeping by wounds
opened I lie
winkles and myriad parasites
eternal baggage
in my cockpit
with oars bound
and the middle desolate.

Sculpture of the deep
I distill calcic tears
and pray for memory's gain.
