Words on the Move

Words on the Move is a series of events that combines the translation of Canadian writing with poetry slams. Everyone interested in venturing into the realm of literary translation is invited to take part by translating a poem and reading it at a public reading. The goal is to open up the field of literary translation by moving it from its usual place in the academic or publishing world into a more democratic, immediate, and lively atmosphere.

In preparation for the slam event, two short poems or excerpts by Canadian writers, one in French and one in English, are selected and published on our Web site. Members of the public are invited to try their hand at translating one or both of them.

Shortly afterwards, the participants join the authors of the two texts and experienced translators at a public reading. Audience members have a chance to decide which translations they like best.

The translations will also be published on the LTAC Web site, and some may be selected for publication in ellipse mag, a magazine of poetry in translation which promotes literary translation and intercultural awareness.
