About / Bio

Before entering university, I spent a year in Indonesia, where I learned the basics of the Indonesian language while getting acquainted with the linguistic, cultural and religious diversity of this country, the largest in Southeast Asia. This experience was truly the most determining of my early adult life.
Originally from Quebec City, I hold a B.A. from the Université de Montréal, where I studied Chinese language and civilization, general linguistics and demography. My ongoing interest for Indonesia led me to attend twice the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute in American universities. I also went back to Indonesia to study at the Malang Teachers’ Training College, now the National University of Malang, in East Java, where I obtained a certificate of advanced Indonesian language.
I pursued my higher education at McGill University where I obtained an M.A. degree with a thesis, written in English, on modern Indonesian literature from a perspective mixing semiotic, sociological, historical and anthropological approaches.
I’ve worked in academic management and research from 1998 till 2022 but my first translations from English into French were published as early as 1993. I’ve also worked as a freelance interpreter for the Department of the Secretary of State of Canada and the Quebec Department of Justice. My first book-length literary translation, Confidences de Pariyem, by the great Indonesian poet and critic Linus Suryadi, was shortlisted for the John-Glassco Translation Prize in 2017.
