Not widely regarded and tolerated as a necessary evil, translators did not enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attlc-ltac.org\/en\/origin\/\">working conditions<\/a> conducive to the development of their profession and literary translation as a form of creation in its own right.<\/p>\n<p>Below are some milestones in the history of the Literary Translators&#8217; Association of Canada and of literary translation in Canada more generally:<\/p>\n<h4>1947<\/h4>\n<p>Given that, at the time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ggbooks.ca\/#winners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Governor General&#8217;s Literary Awards<\/a> were awarded solely to English books, Hannah Josephson&#8217;s translation of Gabrielle Roy&#8217;s novel <em>Bonheur d&#8217;occasion<\/em> that receives the prestigious award<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><h4>1957<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadacouncil.ca\/?_ga=2.27735352.543024252.1561581002-1888832752.1526478838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Canada Council for the Arts<\/a> is established to provide translation assistance on an ad hoc basis.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><h4>1959<\/h4>\n<p>Works in French are now accepted for the Governor General&#8217;s Literary Awards.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><h4>1972<\/h4>\n<p>The Canada Council for the Arts sets up the Translation Assistance Program to aide publishers in the production of translations. and &#8220;Traduction&#8221; to the Governor General&#8217;s Literary Awards.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-13\"><h4>1990s<\/h4>\n<p>The Canada Council&#8217;s Translation Grant for Publishers is raised to $ 0.12 per word.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-14\"><h4>2003<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.banffcentre.ca\/programs\/banff-international-literary-translation-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creation of the Banff International Literary Translation Centre<\/a> (BILTC), thanks in large part to the efforts of the LTAC. Two members of the Association sit permanently on the BILTC Advisory Board.<\/p>\n<p>LTAC participates in an international conference on copyright at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The meeting is organized on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the International Federation of Translators.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-15\"><h4>2005<\/h4>\n<p>Roughly 350 Canadian and American translators gather in Montreal to attend a conference organized jointly by the LTAC and the American Literary Translators Association.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-16\"><h4>2007<\/h4>\n<p>LTAC partners with the BILTC to organize a conference for Canadian and foreign translators, authors and publishers.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-17\"><h4>2010<\/h4>\n<p>LTAC receives a grant from Canadian Heritage for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attlc-ltac.org\/en\/words-on-the-move\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Words on the Move<\/a>, a series of events organized in cities across the country that encourages audience members to partake in the translation of literary texts by Canadian authors.<\/p>\n<p>In September, LTAC launches a series of monthly workshops at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attlc-ltac.org\/en\/plateau-workshops-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plateau Mont-Royal Library<\/a> in Montreal, led by renowned translators.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-18\"><h4>2012-2013<\/h4>\n<p>With the support of the Canada Book Fund and the Canada Council for the Arts, LTAC hostes copyright workshops in seven major cities across the country for professional literary translators.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-19\"><h4>2018<\/h4>\n<p>LTAC organizes a strong presence at the 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianwriterssummit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Writers Summit<\/a>, a super-conference jointly hosted by a cohort of Canadian writer organizations. Our association sponsors three successful panels at the CWS: <em>Inviolate Space \/ Espace inviol\u00e9<\/em>, <em>Good Reasons for Translating and Publishing International Literature in Canada,<\/em> and <em>They Are with Us: Translation and Its Effects<\/em>. The panels are very well attended, with the third one attracting the attention of the editors of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writersunion.ca\/about-write-magazine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TWUC magazine <em>Write<\/em><\/a>, who consequently invite the participants to contribute to an article that expands on the ideas discussed in the panel.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-20\"><h4>2019<\/h4>\n<p>LTAC develops three significant partnerships that help grow the association&#8217;s presence and influence both in Canada and abroad:<\/p>\n<p>The first is with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frye.ca\/mission-et-valeurs?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frye Festival<\/a>, the most prestigious literary event in Atlantic Canada, which yields four events taking from late February to early May in Moncton, Fredericton, and Halifax.<\/p>\n<p>The second partnership is with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maisondelalitterature.qc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maison de la litt\u00e9rature<\/a> in Qu\u00e9bec City and consists of supporting the development of the Maison&#8217;s inaugural literary translation residency.<\/p>\n<p>The third is with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bclt.org.uk\/summer-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Centre for Literary Translation\u2019s International Summer School<\/a> in Literary Translation &amp; Creative Writing. LTAC is invited to co-sponsor the French to English &amp; English to French workshop which is led by member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attlc-ltac.org\/en\/translator\/arianne-desrochers-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arianne Des Rochers<\/a> and features the work of author Nathana\u00ebl.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep fusion-clearfix\" style=\"float:left;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-single sep-solid\" style=\"border-color:#02bbad;border-top-width:1px;\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column
