We are glad to announce the launch of a new series of talks on poetry and translation! The first event, Here is Elsewhere<\/em>, is this Friday, February 19 at 7pm and will feature poets A.F. Moritz<\/a> and Luciano Iacobelli<\/a> engaging in a discussion on the poetry of Ludwig Zeller<\/a>. Here is Elsewhere<\/em> is the brainchild of Beatriz Hausner<\/a>, who conceived of it as a space for the reading, discussion, performance and promotion of world literature in translation.<\/p>\n

“Here Is Elsewhere<\/em> will have as its focus literature in translation,” says Hausner. “Since most of the world\u2019s literature is not written in English, providing a space where translated literature can be discussed, read and promoted seems to me to be self-evident.”<\/p>\n

A. F. Moritz has written more than twenty books of poetry, and has received the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Award in Literature of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and the Ingram Merrill Fellowship. His collection, The Sentinel, won the 2009 Griffin Poetry Prize, was a finalist for the Governor General\u2019s Literary Award, and was a Globe and Mail Top 100 of the Year. His most recent collections are The Sparrow (2018) and As Far As You Know (2020). Moritz has translated many authors, including Gilberto Meza and Benjamin P\u00e9ret, but his dedication to Ludwig Zeller\u2019s oeuvre stands out for its scope and depth. He lives in Toronto, where he is serving as the city\u2019s sixth Poet Laureate.<\/p>\n

Luciano Iacobelli is a Toronto born poet, playwright and visual artist. He is the author of several full length books of poetry including: The Angel Notebook (2007), Book of Disorders (2011), Painting Circles (2011) The Emu Dialogues, with Jens Kohler and Robert Marra (2015), The Examined Life (2016), Dolor Midnight (2018), and the forthcoming Noctograms . He has been active in the literary community as a creative writing instructor, event organizer, editor, and most significantly as founder and former publisher of Quattro Books, and the publisher of Lyrical Myrical Books, a press specializing in hand-made limited edition books.<\/p>\n

Ludwig Zeller (born 1927 in R\u00edo Loa, Chile, died in 2019 in Oaxaca, Mexico) was one of the principal exponents of international surrealism. Writing in Spanish, his poetry output was prodigious and included seminal works such as Las reglas del juego, Cuando el animal de fondo sube la cabeza estalla, Los engranajes del encantamiento, El embrujo de M\u00e9xico, to name but four among more than forty titles. Much of his poetry, as well as his novel R\u00edo Loa estaci\u00f3n de los sue\u00f1os, has been translated into English by A.F. Moritz and others. Zeller was renowned as a collage artist. Hundreds of exhibitions, as well as several books of his visual work, including 50 Collages and Espejo para insomnes, attest to the innovations he brought to the technique.<\/p>\n

Beatriz Hausner has published several poetry collections, including Sew Him Up (2010), Enter the Raccoon (2012), and Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart (2020). Her books have been published internationally and translated into several languages, including her native Spanish, French, Dutch, and most recently Greek. As a translator she places her focus on Latin American Surrealism. Her translations of C\u00e9sar Moro, Rosamel del Valle, Jorge C\u00e1ceres, Braulio Arenas, Enrique G\u00f3mez-Correa, Olga Orozco and Aldo Pellegrini have exerted an important influence on her own writing. She lives in Toronto.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
