What are you reading at the moment and would you recommend it?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I\u2019m reading <i>Valentino and Sagittarius<\/i> by Natalia Ginzburg (trans. Avril Bardoni), a book of two short stories. And yes, would recommend!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>2. Do you read translations? More specifically, do you read translations in the language from which you translate?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I often read translations. Some I particularly enjoyed in the last year have been the Tove Ditlevsen Copenhagen trilogy (trans. Tiina Nunnally and Michael Favala Goldman), <i>The Memory Police<\/i> by Y\u014dko Ogawa (trans. Stephen Snyder), <i>Abigail<\/i> by Magda Szab\u00f3 (trans. Len Rix), <i>Will and Testament<\/i> by Vigdis Hjorth (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/blogs\/4451-on-translating-vigdis-hjorth\"><span class=\"s3\">trans. Charlotte Barsland<\/span><\/a>) and <i>Notes of a Crocodile <\/i>by Qiu Miaojin (trans. Bonnie Huie).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I do sometimes read French books in their English translation, yes. I find it fascinating how some translations seize and render the voice so much clearer than others; and I\u2019m interested in why. Reading translations from any language helps me see the myriad ways that languages can land in English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>3. Are you working on anything at the moment\u2009?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I\u2019m currently translating <i>Le drap blanc <\/i>by C\u00e9line Huyghebaert, a daughter\u2019s archive of her father\u2019s life and death told through an excavation of memories\u2014memories experienced or recounted by others, altered by time and their retelling. (It\u2019s a blend of dialogues and prose, facts and fiction). The book is forthcoming in its English translation from Book*hug Press in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I\u2019m also co-translating two graphic novels this spring: <i>This is How I Disappear <\/i>by Mirion Malle and <i>Secret Passages <\/i>by Axelle Lenoir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>4. What was your first translation? How did this experience impact your career?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">It was a little paragraph translated for a Spanish class in university\u2014an excerpt of a novel but don\u2019t remember which, something about a house falling to ruin. The class was taught by literary translator Hugh Hazelton, and I really loved it, and eventually switched programs to the French translation program because of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>5. If you could travel back in time to the start of your career, what advice would you give yourself?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Maybe: it\u2019s okay to say no to projects that you\u2019re not a good fit for. (But would probably not alter a timeline just to tell myself that).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>6. What is your dream project? In other words, if you could choose any book to be translated, regardless of publishing rights, or if the text had already been translated, what would it be?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">If it hadn\u2019t already been translated: <i>H\u00e9lo\u00efse<\/i> by Anne H\u00e9bert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>7. What is your chief characteristic as a translator?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Collaborative. I like to work with other translators, writers, editors, etc.\u2014to have them as readers or revisors or co-translators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>8. What is the quality you most like in a translator?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Stunning Scrabble skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>9.
