Notes Biographiques
A former vice-president of the LTAC, Betty Bednarski is Professor Emerita at Dalhousie University, in Halifax, where she taught Quebec literature and Canadian Studies for many years. She has published translations of works by Quebec’s great physician writer Jacques Ferron, most recently Tales from the Uncertain Country and Other Stories (2010), a collection of 41 “tales”. She won an Honorable Mention for Selected Tales of Jacques Ferron (1984) in the 1985 Canada Council Translation Prize. She has also written extensively on various aspects of Quebec literature. Some of her writings deal with questions of translation theory and practice, among them, her articles “From Ouèredéare to Soçaurez: Translating the English of Jacques Ferron” (in Culture in Transit, ed. Sherry Simon, Véhicule Press, 1995); “La traduction comme lieu d’échanges” (in Échanges culturels entre les Deux solitudes, ed. Marie-Andrée Beaudet, PUL, 1999); and “Translating Ferron, Ferron translating : thoughts on an example of ‘translation within’” (in Meta, Vol. 45, No. 1, 2000). Her award-winning book Autour de Ferron: littérature, traduction, altérité (Toronto: Éditions du GREF, 1989) was published in a newly revised and expanded edition by les Presses de l’Université Laval in 2012.
