About / Bio

Born in northwestern Quebec, Valentina Baslyk is a freelance translator based in Montreal. Her educational qualifications include an M.A. in Russian Literature from McGill University, 1981; a Ph.D. in Russian Literature from the University of Toronto, 1995; and a Graduate Diploma in French-to-English Translation, Concordia University, 2001. Valentina started her career as a translator when she was teaching Russian language and literature at Grinnell College in Iowa in the late 1980s. Her first translation, a short story by Valeri Popov called Dreams from the Top Berth, was published in Glasnost: An Anthology of Russian Literature under Gorbachev, 1990. Her published work now includes more translations of French titles than Russian ones. Over the years, she has translated books on health and nutrition, exhibition catalogues, dozens of medical articles, and hundreds of articles from the financial pages of the Quebec press, as well as numerous articles relating to Quebec law and the Quebec education system. She has also translated a variety of texts for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Valentina is a life-long fan of the Habs and of detective fiction.
