Notes Biographiques

Patricia Claxton was born in Kingston, Ontario, spent most of her childhood in India, and eventually came to Montreal, where she graduated from The Study School, McGill University (B.A.), and l'Université de Montréal (M.A. Translation). After working in investment analysis, she returned to her studies, family duties permitting, and began practicing freelance translation in 1964. She taught translation for eight years at l'Université de Montréal. A certified member of the Ordre des traducteurs et interprètes agréés du Québec, she served four years on its Council, with responsibility for the development of examination procedures and standards. She was also founding president of the LTAC. Besides her literary and other translations, she has written articles, addresses, and briefs, mainly on various aspects of translation. She received the Governor General's Award for translation in 1987 and Canada Council Honorable Mentions for translation in 1973, 1980, and 1986, and was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award in 1990 and 1994. She is currently translating François Ricard's biography of Gabrielle Roy.
