Notes Biographiques

Born and bred in Montreal and educated at McGill, UQAM and Concordia (MA in English literature), I translate fiction, non-fiction and poetry from French to English, working solo or with co-translator Howard Scott. My most recent translations include Black Thursday, a memoir by French journalist Maurice Rajsfus, and Message Sticks, poems by the Innu writer Joséphine Bacon, and, with Howard Scott, Madeleine Gagnon’s As Always: Memoir of a Life in Writing, the latest of four books by Gagnon that we have translated together. My other translations include novels by Stéphane Bourguignon and Hélène Vachon, poetry by Kim Doré and conversations between Victor-Lévy Beaulieu and Margaret Atwood (all co-translated by Howard Scott), as well as stories by Naïm Kattan. I would be happy to provide a complete list of my publications on request. My literary interests are wide-ranging and I love the challenge each new book brings. The Wanderer, my translation of La Québécoite, by Régine Robin, won a Jewish Literary Award, and The Great Peace of Montreal of 1701, by Gilles Havard, co-translated with Howard Scott, won a Quebec Writers' Federation Translation Award; other translations by Howard Scott and me have graced several shortlists. I have served as president of the Literary Translators’ Association of Canada and sat on the Public Lending Right Commission of Canada.
