About / Bio

Claire Varin, Literature Ph.D., French Canadian writer and translator. Novels: Profession Indien, Clair-obscur à Rio, Désert désir, (prize winning book 2002, Société des écrivains canadiens), La Mort de Peter Pan, 2009. Short stories: Le carnaval des fêtes, 2003. Essay on Clarice Lispector (Langues de feu, 1990) and interviews with the great Brazilian writer (Rencontres brésiliennes, 2007, with manuscripts and iconographic documents). She was directing anthologies and a literary magazine on short stories and poetry, she was also part of juries for associations and governments. She was coordinating an album with photographs on nature, by the famous Canadian photographs Mia & Klaus (Dieu, 2010), adding quotations of texts from different religious traditions. She gave lectures at the Montreal University, translated several texts from Portuguese, organized literary events, created the "Fondation lavalloise des lettres", and performed reading sessions. Her writing has been translated in several languages and her essay on Lispector was published in Brazil (Línguas de Fogo, 2002).

Awards & Distinctions

In 2002, Claire Varin won the Canadian Writers' Society Novel Award for her novel Désert désir, and a prize from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (Laval region) for her literary work and community involvement. She received a Coup de cœur du jury 2006 award from the Conseil de la culture de Laval for two collectives she directed, Une île en mots. Laval se livre and La Route de l'art public, du patrimoine et de la littérature.
