I knew Jerry Chapple long before I was a member of the LTAC, even before I moved to Quebec from Ontario. Professor Chapple taught German literature at McMaster University. He introduced me, for example, to the poetry of Paul Celan.
In 1986, the LTAC organized its first joint conference with the American Literary Translators Association. I was not yet eligible to join, but I knew the Association and attended the conference. There I was happy to run into Jerry, who was an active member of ALTA. Jerry joined the LTAC and attended LTAC events as well as ALTA conferences.
In 2005, a second joint LTAC/ALTA conference was organized in Montreal and Jerry was a key member of the organizing committee. The event brought LTAC members together with American translators from many languages and was a resounding success.
