D.M. Bradford wins the 2023 John Glassco Translation Prize

Montreal, November 2nd, 2023 – The Literary Translators’ Association of Canada (LTAC) is pleased to announce that this year’s John Glassco Literary Translation Prize was awarded to D.M. Bradford, a poet and translator based in Montreal.

Bradford’s House Within a House, a translation of Nicholas Dawson’s Désormais, ma demeure, was published by Brick House. It was chosen from 11 first book-length translations into French or English published between July 1st, 2022 and June 30th, 2023.

This year’s jury was comprised of Sonya Malaborza (Chair), Luba Markovskaia and Simon Brown. All three are professional literary translators and full members of LTAC.

According to the jury’s citation, “Bradford’s translation renders Dawson’s prose with a marked poetic sensitivity without losing the source text’s breath, nuances and complex heteroglossic interplay.” Their work distinguished itself from three close competitors – Jennifer Henderson (Dalie Giroux, The Eye of the Master, McGill-Queen’s University Press), Stéphane Martelly (Kaie Kellough, Équateur magnétique, Tryptique) and Marie C Scholl-Dimanche (Gord Hill, 500 ans de résistance autochtone, Prise de parole).

For their first book-length translation, D.M. Bradford was awarded $1,000 and a one-year membership. The award presentation took place on Saturday, October 28th, during a well-attended celebration of literary translation at the Cinémathèque québécoise.
