The next Here is Elsewhere event is set for Friday, April 30th at 7:00 pm EST. This series, now in its third instalment, is the brainchild of Beatriz Hausner, who conceived it as a space for the reading, discussion, performance and promotion of world literature in translation. Beatriz will welcome Karl Jirgens and Mārta Ziemelis to explore and discuss the topic of translating Latvian literature.

Dr. Karl Jirgens, former English Dept. Head, at U Windsor, author of four books (Coach House, Mercury, and ECW Presses), edited two books (on painter Jack Bush, and poet Christopher Dewdney) plus, an issue of Open Letter magazine with Beatriz Hausner. His scholarly and creative works are published globally. Jirgens edited/published Rampike, an international journal of art, writing, and theory (1979-2016). Rampike featured numerous Latvian and European writers in translation. His newest book of short fiction is due in 2022.

Mārta Ziemelis is a Toronto-based literary translator. She began with French-English translation, but now works primarily with Latvian-English. Mārta’s Latvian-English translations include “Do you exist, or did my mind invent you?”, a poem by Gunta Micāne (TransLit Volume 11: An Anthology of Literary Translations, 2017), two short stories in the anthology The Book of Riga (Comma Press, 2018), and Narcoses, a poetry collection by Madara Gruntmane, co-translated with Richard O’Brien (Parthian, 2018). She has also worked on picture books, and is currently translating Vizma Belševica’s Bille trilogy.

Beatriz Hausner has published several poetry collections, including Enter the Raccoon (2012), and Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart (2020). Her books have been published internationally, most recently in Greek translation. As a translator she places her focus on Latin American Surrealism.
