The Literary Translators Association of Canada and the Quebec Writers’ Federation are proud to announce the creation of the Karin Montin LTAC/QWF Mentorship in Literary Translation, to be offered in alternate years beginning in 2022. Named for a well-loved member of the LTAC and QWF communities who passed away in August, the mentorship is designed to help promising aspiring and emerging translators make the transition to the next stage of their careers.

Karin enjoyed a 35-year career as a freelance translator, editor, and technical writer in a broad range of fields. She also taught translation at the Université de Montréal, Concordia University, McGill University from 1984 to 1991, and was an active tutor for adult literacy programs. A woman of many talents, she was an avid murder mystery reader, a keen enthusiast of crosswords, particularly of the cryptic variety; an uncrowned champion in all manner of trivia, general knowledge and especially word-related board games in both English and French; an accomplished amateur photographer; and a fierce feminist.

Emerging Canadian translators of literary work into English will be invited to apply to be mentored by an established translator over a period of four months (February 1 to May 31, 2022) and to take part in a public reading in Montreal in June.

Established professional Canadian literary translators who wish to be mentors will also be invited to apply. Mentors must be LTAC members in good standing.

Both mentors and a short list of potential mentees will be selected by an independent jury. Depending on geographical location and public health requirements in the winter/spring of 2022, the mentorships may be conducted primarily or exclusively by email and Zoom.

The deadline to submit your applications is October 22, 2021. For information on eligibility criteria, or to submit your application, please visit the Quebec Writers’ Federation’s website.

A call for a separate 2023 French-language LTAC Mentorship in Literary Translation will be announced in 2022.
